Understanding Risk and Escalation

This session will look at key principles and practice approaches to identifying risk where someone is experiencing domestic abuse, strategies for engaging with women, promoting safety planning, understanding risk and escalation triggers.  It will explore risk and escalation, centring women’s experiences and exploring  theoretical frameworks to predict risk such as the 8 Stage Domestic Abuse Timeline and other risk management tools.  It will end by considering how best to respond to risk and highlight pathways to support.

Participants can expect to:

  • Develop an appreciation and understanding of the impact of coercive control and domestic abuse on those who experience it and how it affects their behaviour and choices
  • Explore and discuss the benefits and limitations of risk assessment tools and strategies
  • Be better placed to identify signs of risk and escalation of abuse in people’s relationships and respond to it appropriately
  • Develop understanding of the main issues of providing a sensitive and appropriate service to women experiencing domestic abuse and coercive control
  • Develop confidence and knowledge to better identify risk, assess protective factors and increase safety.
  • Consider how intersectionality may further impact women experiencing abuse to reduce inequalities and improve outcomes
