In Person Workshop: Supporting Deaf Survivors of Domestic Abuse

March 17 at 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
£35.00

Join us for our upcoming In‑Person Workshop: Supporting Deaf Women Experiencing Domestic Abuse, taking place on Tuesday 17th March, 10am–1pm, at Rose Street, Edinburgh, £35 pp. The session will be fully signed with BSL interpreters.

Following the overwhelmingly positive feedback from our November webinar Understanding Domestic Abuse in Deaf Communities, attendees asked for further practical learning—and we’re delighted to provide this follow‑up session.

This interactive, in-person workshop—led by Professor Jemina Napier (Heriot-Watt University) and Lucy Clark (Project Officer and deaf survivor)—draws on research and insights from the Justisigns 2 and SILENT HARM projects, which explored deaf women’s experiences of domestic abuse,  the challenges they encounter when reporting it and the approaches and solutions that practitioners can adopt to better support deaf survivors.

This in person interactive workshop will deepen your understanding of:

  • The lived experiences of Deaf women affected by domestic abuse.
  • How perpetrators use women’s deafness as a tool of control, creating unique and often hidden dynamics of harm.
  • The barriers Deaf survivors face when trying to access safety and support.
  • Practical solutions and strategies to strengthen your responses when supporting deaf survivors.
  • Guidance on accessing and working with BSL interpreters in the context of domestic abuse and domestic abuse informed practice.
  • Explore and Identify how you can respond with confidence, inclusivity, and effectiveness—ensuring that support and services truly meet the needs of Deaf women.

You’ll leave with enhanced awareness, practical tools, and clear guidance to strengthen accessibility and safety within your own service.

We hope you’ll join us in building services where every woman can access safety and support relevant to their needs and communication methods.
